The house mouse, gray in color and about 4 to 5 inches long, weighs in at about one ounce. They have pointed muzzles, large ears, small eyes and small bodies. Mice droppings are rod-shaped with pointed ends. Mice have about 8 liters per year, each liter averages about 6 young. Their life span is about 1 year. They are excellent climbers and can jump 12 inches high. They can easily squeeze through holes and gaps only ¼ inches wide. They prefer to nest in dark secluded areas where there is little chance of being disturbed. Their nest could be located where paper, cardboard, attic insulation, cotton, etc. are readily available.

How to Eliminate Mice from Home or Business

To get rid of mice you must look for signs of activity, such as droppings and rub marks. Entry points greater than ¼ inch must be sealed. Pet food and water shouldn’t be easily accessible for mice. That means pet food should be stored in containers and no water bowls left outside or in the garage. Within structures, glue boards and snap traps are effective. Poison for mice indoors is not recommended, poison will kill them, but you don't want mice dying in inaccessible places such as attics, wall voids, behind cabinets or places accessible for animals or children.

Do Mice Transmit Disease?

Major Health risks associated with rodents are leptospirosis and sometimes salmonella contamination. Plague is of little concern because it has not occurred in rodents in the United States in many years. Leptospirosis is acquired by eating food and drinking water that is contaminated with infected rodent urine.

If I See One Mouse, Does That Mean I Have An Infestation?

Seeing a single mouse in the home could mean there is a bigger issue close by, especially if you've seen the mouse more than once. Foraging territories are usually no more than 10-20 feet. If you see one rodent, it is best to contact a rodent pest control expert right away before the issue grows larger without notice.
